The book can serve as a text for a graduate complexity course that prepares graduate students interested in theory to do research in complexity and related areas. Such a course can use parts of Part I to review basic material, and then move on to the advanced topics of Parts II and III. The book contains far more material than can be taught
The book concentrates on the important ideas in machine learning. I do not give proofs of many of the theorems that I state, but I do give plausibility arguments and citations to formal proofs. And, I do not treat many matters that would be of practical importance in applications; the book is not a handbook of machine learning practice.
This book evolved from material developed over several years by Anand Raja-raman and Jeﬀ Ullman for a one-quarter course at Stanford. The course CS345A, titled “Web Mining,” was designed as an advanced graduate course, although it has become accessible and interesting to advanced undergraduates.
